What's Coming Next

I've been a little quiet here, but I'm working on many things. Next up is another Captain Lacey Regency Mystery, A Death in Norfolk. Read about that and the rest of the series at http://www.gardnermysteries.com/ (Most recent release is a short story collection The Gentleman's Walking Stick.) The books are also now being re-released in print.

In November, a new Shifters novella will join the Shifters Unbound series. BodyGuard, Ronan's story, will be out November 15. I will post more information, excerpts, etc. as that day nears. I'm also working on a Stormwalker short story (by Allyson James) that will likely appear in an anthology (and if not, it will be e-pubbed). I'll let you know after I turn that in when that anthology will happen and where it will be available.

In addition, I'm working on another Stormwalker novel, tentatively titled Nightwalker, that I hope to have out by the end of the year. (Shareem fans: I'm also working on Justin).

This is why I have not been online as much lately! Things seem quiet, but I'm busy working behind the scenes.

I will post more excerpts and details as release dates near.

Yay!! Today The Many Sins of Lord Cameron hits the shelves! I've had reports of sightings at Wal-mart, Borders going out of business sales, and other places. It is also available as an ebook on Nook, Kindle, Sony, etc etc.

Also released is The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie once again available! It has been out of print (and e-) since December, so I'm thrilled it's on the shelves again!

I hope you enjoy Cameron's story and have a chance to revisit Ian!

A Word about My Backlist

Readers: Over the next few weeks, you may notice my deep Jennifer Ashley backlist no longer available in Kindle, Nook, and other e-editions. (EXCEPT MACKENZIES and SHIFTERS! Those are safe!!!!).

This is because I am getting the rights back from my former publisher, Dorchester. I will be putting the titles up independently on Kindle, Nook, and other vendors through Smashwords. Because I have about a gazillion books (ok, I think ten books and four novellas), it's going to take some time.

It's not a question of slapping them up there--I need to commission new covers, re-edit the original files, and get them proofread. Please be patient with me! I will put each book up as soon as it's finished and announce when it's available. I am working on a publishing schedule so you'll know what's coming when.

Thank you for supporting these books over the years, and I hope to soon make them available to you again. At new lower prices!! :-)

Pride Mates (Shifters Unbound Series)

Next week (July 5), Pride Mates, the first book of the Shifters Unbound series, will be back on the shelves!! It's being re-printed by Berkley (is already available as an ebook).

I was thrilled that Berkley could again use the cover art by Franco. I love that picture.

I have more announcements about this series, but I have to wait until everything's concrete before I give you some fun news. Darn it.

On another note: The Many Sins of Lord Cameron, which has been getting some fabulous reviews from Publisher's Weekly and RT Bookreviews, is just around the corner. AUGUST 2!! Coinciding with the re-release of The Madnesss of Lord Ian with a brand new cover.

I can't get to RWA this year, but I assure you, I'll be spending the time writing. On the fun things I will tell you about soon. :-) And many other things!

I recently got word that PRIDE MATES (Book 1 of Shifters Unbound) will be re-released in both mass market paperback and e-book in July 2011. The cover is similar to the first, but this one will be published by Berkley Sensation. So it will be available again, hooray! Pre-order from Amazon by clicking the title (the Kindle and other versions will be available closer to release date).

Reminder that Book 2 of Shifters Unbound: PRIMAL BONDS releases on March 1, 2011. Soon!

The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie will be re-released by Berkley in August 2011 to coincide with the release of The Many Sins of Lord Cameron. You can preorder those by clicking the titles. (Lord Ian will also be available in e-book again at that time.)

I seriously need to update my website, and I'm working on that. In the meantime:

Highlander Ever After will be re-released January 1, 2011 as a trade-sized paperback (the big ones). It is the same as the earlier mass market release, just in a different size (this was the publisher's decision). You can order it from Amazon by clicking this link.

Other news: The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie will be re-released by Berkley in August 2011 to coincide with the release of The Many Sins of Lord Cameron. You can preorder those by clicking the titles.

Note that while Lord Ian will have a new cover, it is the same book. No changes. Just a new cover and new publisher!

I will overhaul my website soon, especially the Books page, to reflect the changes in how to buy my Dorchester books, and which books are or are no longer available. I've basically switched entirely to Berkley, so my books going forward should be easier to obtain.

DAY NINE--JANET BEGAY

And finally, Janet Begay, the star of the show.

Janet's had a rough start to life, being motherless, a bad thing to be in a matriarchical society. Because no one knows who Janet's mother's people or clans were, they don't trust her much. Of course, Janet's mother is a goddess from Beneath, and the evil she's invested in Janet is pretty powerful.

Janet's dad, on the other hand, is a sweet guy who was seduced by the goddess. He raised Janet on his own, with the help of Janet's formidable grandmother (who can become a Crow).

Janet is a Stormwalker, which means she can draw power from nearby storms and use it to work amazing magic. When it's storming, nothing can stop her. When it's not storming--good thing she has Mick. Her power manifested when she was a kid, and it terrified her. With the help of Jamison Kee and Mick, Janet has been able to hone her power to a controlled weapon.

But now, another power is rising within her, and she's not sure that she'll ever get that one under control. (More about this in FIREWALKER and SHADOW WALKER.)

DAY EIGHT--MAYA

Maya Madina, a black-haired, dark-eyed Latina who grew up in Magellan, is one of the few non-magical characters in the Stormwalker series. She's kind of a foil for Janet--Maya is smart, good at her job (Janet's electrician), sassy as hell, doesn't take crap from anyone, and the only person not the least bit afraid of Janet.

In Maya, Janet finds a friend, though their friendship gets off to a rocky start. Maya is slow to trust, but once she likes you, she's loyal to the end.

Maya's madly in love with Sheriff Nash Jones. Their affair is rocky, but Maya's determine to work through it, and prove to Jones that he loves her back.

Maya held out her hand. “Come with me. We’re going to get you dinner.”
“I can’t,” I said.
“I’m not going to bring you a tray. Your cook is a scary b*tch, and I don’t want to interrupt her when she’s anywhere near her knives.”

The question of the day: Secondary romances (i.e., a romance between secondary characters that's not the focus of the book). Like them? Think they take away from the main story? Won't read a book without them? What'dya think?

Cassandra Bryson is a super-powerful witch who becomes Janet's hotel manager. Cassandra is blonde, lovely, businesslike, good at her job, and way-wicked with magic. She used to work for a top luxury hotel chain in California, but for reasons she's not telling, she's decided to bury herself in a backwater desert town.

Janet isn't sure why Cassandra's interested in working in the middle of nowhere, but she welcomes Cassandra's no-strings-attached help. But Cassandra has some dark secrets that Janet suspects will someday come back to bite them.

Cassandra becomes part of the team in FIREWALKER and SHADOW WALKER, and you learn more about her in the HEXED anthology.

Colby is dark-haired, blue-eyed, full of muscle and inked all over. He's snarky, smart, and up to something. I introduce him for the first time in FIREWALKER, and you'll see him again in SHADOW WALKER (coming in June).

As I sat down, Mick flashed me a warning look and said, “The magic mirror showed him everything.”
“Everything.” Colby’s grin became a leer. “It was stimulating, even if I had to watch through a lot of cracks.”
My face heated. “I swear I’m melting that thing.”
“Don’t be embarrassed," Colby said. "It was beautiful. Way better than anything I can find on that motel TV.”

I love writing new characters and lots of them. Do you prefer books that focus solely on the H/H with a few characters for spice, or do you like a lot of characters, with depth, running around?

Jamison Kee is a handsome Navajo shaman and a Changer (shifter) who takes the form of a mountain lion. He loves Naomi, the lady with the blue-green eyes who makes him a whole person.

Jamison is Janet’s oldest friend, the one who helped the teenaged Janet make sense of the storm power that rocked her. Without Jamison’s instruction, she’d never have survived.

Jamison and Naomi’s love story is told in “A Little Night Magic,” in the Hot for the Holidays anthology available from Berkley Publishing.

I've gotten more email about the magic mirror than any other character! It has the voice of a drag queen and a fixation on sex. It's snarky and loud, with a penchant for bursting into show tunes in the middle of the night. But since it’s saved the day on more than one occasion, Janet lets it live.

Magic mirrors hold incredible magic. They can communicate over any distance with other magic mirrors, and non-magical ones if they can attune to them. They can enhance spells, seek information, and are utterly bound to the mage in whose power it's in at the moment.

Magic mirrors also have Personality.

“Hey, Nash. It’s Janet.”
There was a long silence.
“F*ck,” Nash Jones said, and he hung up on me.

Nash is a complicated guy. He’s a tortured ex-special forces officer, now sheriff of Hopi County, a stickler for the rules and fights PTSD. He grew up a staunch Unbeliever (one who doesn't buy into the "woo-woo" tourism of his little town), but now knows that he houses incredible magic.

Nash is a “null,” a person who can absorb and negate magic, even magic of the gods. No one knows how he got that way or what he can do.

He’s fiercely protective of his territory (which would be the whole county), and doesn’t trust crazy people like Janet and Coyote. But sometimes he’s their greatest asset, and he also knows that sometimes, he needs their help.

From FIREWALKER:
“So, educate me,” Nash said. “There are Stormwalkers like you; Nightwalkers, which are vampires; and then skinwalkers, those creatures I fought out at the vortexes. What are werewolves—dogwalkers?”

I had conflicting opinions about Nash--some people really liked him; others didn't. I like him because he has many layers, which I peel away as the series goes. How do you feel about characters that you might not like at first. Do they grow on you? Or do you give up on them?

Still Going Strong!

I appreciate all the support of my readers, and I just want to reassure everyone that I am not going away! :-) I'm writing for Berkley now, and all my series will continue in mass market paperback (as well as ebook). Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage was a strong release in July (with Berkley), and I'm looking forward to Primal Bonds (Shifters Book 2) with Berkley in March. I'm also writing more than ever! I'm working on Cam's and Hart's books for the Mackenzie series (out next year), Shifters book 3, and plenty of Allyson James stuff, both at Ellora's Cave and Berkley. (Firewalker will be out in November 2010 from Berkley.) Plus I'm looking to revive my mystery series as Ashley Gardner.

I appreciate everyone's support during this tough time, but rest assured, I'm not finished! I have much more to write, and it's all going to pour out the rest of this year and on through 2012.

Mass Market paperback backlist

I'm noticing my mass markets from Dorchester/Leisure/Love Spell disappearing from Amazon as Dorchester pulls all their books out of print (they're disappearing from stores as well). At this point I have no idea if or when the books will be reprinted. I will have more information as time marches.

Meanwhile, all my Jennifer Ashley works are available from Kindle, Barnes & Noble ebooks, All Romance ebooks, Books on Board and the like (in other words, the e-versions are widely available). Rhapsody, the hardback book club, also has editions of THE MADNESS OF LORD IAN MACKENZIE and PRIDE MATES. There are audio editions of IMMORTALS: THE CALLING and IMMORTALS: THE GATHERING available from Amazon and Audible.

Please note that my Jennifer Ashley books, beginning with LADY ISABELLA'S SCANDALOUS MARRIAGE, followed by PRIMAL BONDS in March and going forward are/will be published with BERKLEY. I'm not going away! Just shifting gears. I will update on the status of my backlist when I have more news.

This is very sad for me, folks. I feel like I should have a going-away party for my books.

If you don't see me sitting as JENNIFER ASHLEY check under ALLYSON JAMES. (Authors are seated alphabetically).

All proceeds from this signing go to literacy. The publishers are donating the books--keep your receipt because you can write off your purchase as a charitable donation. It's a good cause! Which equals shopping without guilt!

There were be 400 or so authors there, so come and have a great time.

Berkley Signing: Friday July 30, 3:00-4:30PM (registered attendees only)

TITLE CHANGE: Shifter Lovin' to Primal Bonds

Update: The title Shifter Lovin' wasn't loved at my publisher, so after a good night of staring at the ceiling brainstorming titles, I gave them a couple dozen others. The one they liked best?

PRIMAL BONDS

So, PRIMAL BONDS is now Shifters Unbound #2. Same book, same characters, same ISBN number, same everything, different title. The Amazon site will be updated in a few days (as soon as everything cycles through), and I already changed it on Goodreads and my own websites.

PRIMAL BONDS is Sean's story--he steps up to mate-claim a half-Fae Lupine Shifter so she can leave a bad situation and relocate to the Austin Shiftertown. Andrea Gray is fine with this, but she never expects the hot Guardian of the Morrissey clan to overwhelm her when he picks her up from the Austin bus station.

Because of the mate claim she was running from, and because Andrea is so far down in her pack, Sean is expecting to meet a submissive she-wolf who can barely lift her head. Instead Andrea meets his gaze with smoke-gray eyes and rocks his world. Intrigued, Sean's protective and mate instincts are aroused, and he'll try anything he can to make this mate claim move beyond one in name only.

I was thrilled that the novella I penned as Allyson James ("A Little Night Magic" in Hot for the Holidays) made it to the finals in the RITA contest (RWA's annual contest for the best romances). It is the standalone "prequel" to my upcoming UF/paranormal romance series Stormwalker (out in May 2010).

I'm working hard on the next Shifters novel, as well as the next Mackenzie novel. Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage is in the can, ready to come out as scheduled in July 2010. I will be posting an excerpt soon!

I'm so thrilled that Pride Mates has made not only the USA Today top 150, but also New York Times!!! Wow. From what my publisher told me, the book didn't have a huge print run, so its success is due to readers giving it a chance. Thank you! And thanks to everyone who has emailed me the past couple of weeks with feedback. I have been swamped, so haven't gotten to respond to every letter, but I do read all my email. (I'm assistant-less; it's just me and the cats!)

This is Book 2 in the Highland Pleasure series (or the Mackenzie series; the book following Madness of Lord Ian.)

Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage will come out in July of this year, from Berkley Sensation.

I'm pleased with the cover--I told the cover designers that Isabella wears a blue ballgown at one point, and this is what they came up with. Pretty.

If you have not read the first book, this is a Victorian set historical romance series. You can read book 2 as a standalone, though of course you'll encounter characters from the first book.

As time nears, I'll be posting more about the book, excerpts, and so forth. You can read about the series as a whole at The Mackenzie Series Page.

Countdown to Pride Mates

I'm starting my countdown to the new shape shifter series: Pride Mates! (Pub date Jan. 26)

For a look at the Shifter world, I've prepared "A Human's Guide to Shifters." Here's a peek:

Shifters: Shape shifters of all species, mostly predatory: Most commonly Feline and Lupine. The Fae bred Shifters millennia ago from the best of each species to be hunters and fighters for the Fae. Shifters rebelled during the human Middle Ages, fought the Shifter/Fae war, and thereafter lived independently of the Fae.

Collars: Developed by a half-Fae, Collars are both magical and technological. Tied to the adrenal system, they send shocks and pain through the Shifter's body if he starts to get violent.

Mates: Pairings recognized by the pride or clan leader in two rituals, one under full sun, one under the full moon. Shifters are not allowed to be legally married under human law, but the sun and moon rituals are recognized by Shifter law as a marriage.

Shiftertowns: Enclaves in inner-cities or remote rural areas cordoned off by humans where Shifters must live. Shifters are not allowed to live outside Shiftertowns.

I finished and submitted the manuscript of Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage, where it now awaits my editor's eyes. We're working on the cover, and I've seen the back blurb which I like (not the art yet; that will be a month or so).

That book will be published by Berkley Sensation in July 2010. More (blurbs, cover, excerpts) as we go!

I have added a bunch of information about the upcoming Pride Mates book, which introduces a new series (another one, can you stand it?), which will come out in Feb. 2010. Click here to go to the series page and read about Shifters, along with a message by my hero, Liam.

What's next? I'm currently working on a couple of things in my Allyson James manifestation (book 2 of Stormwalker, and an erotic novella for a Heat anthology), plus Lord Cameron's story as Jennifer Ashley.

Ah, I love finishing things. I just typed THE END on Mac and Isabella's story. It's just the draft--will be tearing it apart and putting it back together in a couple of days, but for now, Ahhhhh. (I love Mac, though; am looking forward to the second draft with him.)

Autistic/Asperger's characters

Inspector Lewis Sunday night (on PBS), featured a character, an Oxford student, who had Asperger's. The character reminded me very much of Ian Mackenzie! He never looked straight into anyone's eyes, he knew what time he arrived anywhere to the exact minute and how long he stayed, was an artist who could draw anyone rapidly after a quick glance, he knew the social things he was "supposed" to do, but didn't really understand or much care why, and he was the master of the nonsequiter. The actor who portrayed him did a wonderful job. The character gets a lot of air time, and it was a good mystery.

Working week

After a weekend mix of fun with friends and bad family news all around, I'm back to work.

One thing I like about being an author is my relief when it's Monday again and I disappear back into writing. Not that my weekends are so terrible, LOL. But I no longer view the working week with dread.

I think stepping away from a project is always good. Last week I spent working on revisions to Pride Mates, and this morning I opened up Mac and Isabella to see how they were doing. Looking at the book fresh shows me where I need to fix things that I was oblivious to before (too caught up in the story).

I'm really liking Mac. I know everyone loves Ian, and he's a hard act to follow, but Mac is funny and wicked with a warm heart, a man who loves so deeply it hurts him. Since this is a romance novel, we all know how it ends ;-), but his journey is the joy. You'll see Ian again and his other two brothers, Mac and Cam, and meet a few new secondary characters.

So I'm back to work. Last Friday my Berkley editor and I were talking about the cover of Stormwalker, my upcoming contemp. fantasy/romance series. Sounds like it will be cool--though I won't see that art for a bit yet. That book will be written under my Allyson James psuedonym.

I could chat all day, and often do, but for now--back to work!

It looks like my Dorchester backlist is slowly being added as ebooks on B&N.com. I see Immortals: The Redeeming and Highlander Ever After from 2008 as well as Immortals: The Reckoning from this year. I am totally uninvolved in this process, so I don't know when the rest will be, but I'm happy that they've made a start.

All of my Berkley titles as Allyson James are up there, as well as my Jennifer Ashley historical novel: The Queen's Handmaiden.

I haven't tried these ebooks yet, but apparently you can use them on your iPhone or iPod Touch as well as Blackberries and other devices (I MUST get an iPod Touch, must, must, must).

You can access the B&N ebook store through the iTunes store as well.

This is so cool. As an iPod/iTunes/B&N junkie, I can only be happy.

Some updates: The publication date for Pride Mates has been moved to Feburary 2010. Don't blame me--I already turned in the book! Pub schedules get moved for a variety of reasons. For now, the date is FEB 2010.

I've been getting many questions about when the Kindle version of Madness of Lord Ian is coming out, and here's my answer: I don't know!!

What can you (my wonderful readers) do about it?:

and click the link that says "Tell the publisher! I'd like to read this book on Kindle" That link sends a message to Amazon that there's an interested customer (it doesn't grab your name or anything; it's just an alert to Amazon that someone clicked.)

Apparently, the more interest Amazon gets, the faster the Kindle version will be put up.

I truly don't know what is up with the Kindle version. My other books have come out in Kindle almost right away. In fact, this is only one of the frustrating release problems with this book; there have been other fiascoes.

But hey, if the clicking works, I'm all for it! So if you want Kindle, please go click!

Finding Ian

I've been hearing readers saying they are having difficulty finding Madness of Lord Ian, especially at Borders. I truly don't know what is up with that. I know (because I've seen it with my eyeballs), that it is well stocked at B&N and Walmart, and of course indie booksellers. Also, if it hasn't hit a Target in your area it should very soon. And there's always online.
